«Each egg must weigh a maximum of eight grams, no more. There are those who make them for ten, but not me. They are too big for my esophagus and I risk hurting myself. They must be closed carefully, the danger is high. This is why every courier has his own technique. I pack them personally, one by one, without haste. It can even take me all night. The cellophane must be very tight, adhering like a sheath. I wear a mask and gloves, I don’t touch the goods with my hands. I would risk spreading molecules that could attract drug-sniffing dogs. And then the smell of cocaine has always disgusted me…»

Thus begins “The Monkey”, the novel-revelation by Matteo Cateni, making his literary debut with this book published by Paese Edizioni, available in all bookshops from 10 May. A lively and powerful read, with a compelling and flowing style, which narrates a grotesque and paradoxical story and yet as true as the phenomena of drug addiction and drug trafficking: the descent into hell of a boy who, having fallen into the tunnel of heroin, becomes part of a international drug trafficking from which he will emerge completely transformed. In between, love, violence, harsh prison, disillusionments, South America and the desperate search to shake off the “monkey” of drug addiction. Cateni’s adrenaline-filled narration projects the reader into an ups and downs of emotions, up to the frantic search for catharsis. An amazing story that spans three and a half years spent between Italy, Holland, Ecuador and Colombia, in shocking situations bordering on reality.

Matteo Cateni Livorno, born in 1980, actor and musician, was sentenced to 8 years in prison for international drug trafficking between Europe and South America. He served his sentence first in Ibarra prison, Ecuador, and then in Rebibbia, Rome.
