Mondello Prize 2024: here are all the winners

The winners of the fiftieth edition of Mondello International Literary Prize: I am Marco Cassardo with We were immortal (Mondadori), Claudia Durastanti with Missitalia (The Ship of Theseus) e Giovanni Grasso with The secret of Lieutenant Giardina (Rizzoli) for the Italian Opera section.

Antonio Franchini wins the President’s Special Award with The fire you carry inside you (Marsilio); Deborah Gambetta wins the Special Prize for Literature with Incompleteness. A story by Kurt Gödel (Ponte alle Grazie).

The winners were chosen by a Selection Committee made up of writers Giorgio Fontana, Francesco Musolino and Francesca Serafiniwith the participation of the President of the jury Professor Giovanni Puglisi.

“The choices of the Selection Committee are rewarding novels that are very different in style and content and testify to the liveliness of contemporary Italian fiction“, is explained in the presentation.

We were immortal, Missitalia and The secret of Lieutenant Giardinathe three novels winners of the Italian Opera Awardwill be subjected to the vote of one hundred and twenty “strong readers” indicated by twenty-four bookstores from all over Italy. Readers’ preferences will be expressed through online voting and will decide the winner of the SuperMondello Award.

In parallel, a jury of 130 students from secondary schools in Sicily will identify the winner of the Mondello Giovani Award. The students will read the three competing novels and vote for their favourite, justifying their choice with a critical judgement. The Selection Committee will award the Best Motivation Award to the best three opinions written by the students. All awards will be presented at the awards ceremony which will take place in Palermo on Friday 15 November 2024.
