Soverato – Thursday 6 June the priest from Brescia who has lived in Calabria for thirty years presents his new book in Soverato in the Library of the Pratesi University Institute. Panizza founded the “Progetto Sud” community in Lamezia Terme and is the author of books on the ‘ndrangheta, legality and the educational challenges posed by the mafias. His new book “The gift and the city”, published by Bibliotheka editions, a lucid and argued provocation on the future of volunteering, will be presented on Thursday 6 June at 5pm in the Library of the Pratesi University Institute of Soverato, affiliated to the Pontifical University.

In conversation with the author are Luciano Squillaci, President of the Italian Federation of Therapeutic Communities and Spokesman of the Third Sector Forum of Calabria, Massimo Iiritano, Professor of Philosophy of Education and History of Philosophy Institutions at the Pratesi University Institute and President of the Association Friends of Sofia, and the journalist Clara Varano. The meeting takes place in collaboration with the Libreria Incontro di Soverato. “Volunteer associations, Panizza reminds us, are not destined to put improvised plasters on public administrations that are oblivious to the welfare and rights of those who need it most. The intermediate bodies of society do not come together to stem the distractions or misdeeds of politics and the market. And they constitute privileged places not when they distribute consolatory gifts, but if they accompany people to set in motion solidarity, sharing and acceptance, and when they generate and regenerate trust in the inhabitants of a territory. We will only be capable of a future if we know how to adopt an adult style of volunteering, which does not only operate in response to what we see with the naked eye, but investigates with a critical eye into the depths of the immediate and remote causes of difficulties and discomfort. A political role, therefore.”
