What happens when urban life becomes too overwhelming? We retreat to quieter places closer to nature. It is the case of four couples of friends from Austin, Texas, who have decided to make a radical change to their lifestyle.
Tired of the city bustle, they purchased ten acres of land on the Llano Rivergiving life to project they called “Bestie Row,” or also known as “Llano Exit Strategy.”

The vision of Bestie Row
The four couples, all best friends for 20 years, they decided to build a community made up of little ones homesso that they could all be there for each other and support each other.
The land purchased to build houses (located not far from Austin) was not initially inviting, described as dry and unwelcoming. However, through shared vision and hard work, iThe group of friends transformed the area into a river paradise.
Design and construction
The homes, designed by architect Matt Garcia, who had previously worked with the Zipps on their Austin home, are small but functional, each of them measures just 32 square meters.
They are built with corrugated metal siding and roofs designed to collect rainwater, which is then stored in tanks. The interiors are insulated with spray foam and covered in plywood, creating a warm environment that contrasts with the metal exterior.
Common spaces and community life
In addition to individual homes, Garcia has designed a common building of 140 square meters. This space serves as a meeting place for cooking, eating and socializingcomplete with a commercial kitchen and large dining area.

Life on Bestie Row
Living in Bestie Row means be immersed in nature. Every house has one unparalleled views of the river and local wildlifeincluding hares, lynx, deer and a wide variety of birds, is a constant presence in the lives of the four couples.
The nearby stream, which fills with rainfall, adds an extra touch of magic to the area’s visual and soundscape.
Bestie Row is not just a refuge from the city, but a successful experiment in community life. The project demonstrates how the common vision of a shared future can transform a place and the lives of the people who live there.
