Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater | Exit, what changes and everything we know

Some time ago, we witnessed the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater which, together with the confirmation of Silent Hill 2 Remakewants to be the flag for a return of Konami in the panorama of video game lovers.

If a few months ago the Japanese company gave birth to Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1which allows us to recover the first three main episodes of the saga as we remembered them – a very immature release at the time of release, but which fortunately received numerous improving updates as time passed – in this case we are talking about a work on a larger scalesince the idea is to make current Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eatergiving him one updated graphics and technique.

Let’s see everything there is to know about this project, putting together all the information already known.

Things

Delta it’s a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. This is an operation through which a video game is revised with current technologies, sometimes faithfully and other times with modifications and reinterpretations of contents and dynamics.

In the case of Deltawe should fall back into the first hypothesis.

At the moment Konami did not provide a launch window definitive for the launch of MGS Deltabut we know that PlayStation (inadvertently?) included the game in a trailer that wanted to introduce the games coming to PS5 during 2024.

Since then, however, Konami has not expressed itself and when it has shown assets from the game it has always declared that the work was fully underway.

Visiting the official website of the project today, it is underlined how every image or video shown is to be considered as «still in development». The first images, shown in 2023, even spoke of a pre-alpha phase. So we’ll see when there will be the official announcement of the release date.

Considering it was announced some time before, probably we should expect that Silent Hill 2 Remake arrive before MGS Delta on the market: Konami would have no interest in having two such major launches close together, so probably Snake Eater will be released at least a few months after the remake of silent Hill.

What console is it released on?

Konami confirmed on the official website that the release of Delta is waiting on PC (through Steam), PlayStation 5 And Xbox Series.

What changes compared to Snake Eater?

In the note that accompanied the first teaser trailer of the game, Konami he emphasized that he wanted to make a very faithful remake of Metal Gear Solid 3without significant interventions on its contents.

It seems reasonable, then, to expect a 1:1 remake of the adventure set in the 1960s, with some changes that should mainly concern the game mechanicsin some cases a little “woody”, as in the transition from one uniform to another to blend in with the vegetation.

As Konami writes in the official announcement, we can expect:

«A remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Same story immersive and the same compelling world, but now with cutting-edge graphics and 3D audio, which really brings the jungle to life.”

Regarding the contents, on the official website we read:

«We are creating a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eaterone of the most beloved episodes of Metal Gear, which reveals the origin story of Snake, called Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

We are working hard so that it can be one faithful reproduction of the original story and game designwhile it will evolve the gameplay with an amazing graphics and user experience without interruptions».

In a further note released on the official website, Konami confirmed that there will be no significant changes to the storySince Delta will even use the same dub as the original game: «the remake will include the original voices of the characters, a rich storyline and improved features on fighting to survive in hostile scenarios, evolved with an unprecedented graphics sector and an engaging sound sector».

If there were changes to the writing, it would be necessary to re-dub some lines — which in some cases would not even be possible, since some voice actors since the release of Snake Eater today they are no longer there, and it would therefore be necessary to completely re-dub their character.

Given that the game will instead use the same lines already dubbedit is right not to expect any changes to the events and the development of the events starring Naked Snake.

Regarding the curious choice of name, Konami expressed itself with https://twitter.com/Metalgear/status/1661550418357534721 of the saga, where he explained:

“The Delta symbol it was chosen because its meaning fits with the concept of the remake project.

Delta means ‘change’ or ‘difference’ without however altering the structure.”

Below is the tweet in the original language:

In short, it seems clear that the name itself is intended to suggest a change without upheavalsthat is, a very faithful remake of the original sacred monster released in 2004.

Additionally, avoiding putting a number in the game title allows Konami to make things easier on the marketing sidesince it would be very difficult to approach new players of the saga Metal Gear they just heard about it, asking him to start with chapter 3, as emphasized instead by the original name of Snake Eater.

Why start with MGS3?

One has to ask, then, why start right there Metal Gear Solid 3and perhaps not from the original Metal Gear Solidwhich is also how millions of people discovered Hideo Kojima’s series.

The reason, which historical fans of the saga could actually guess, is linked to the fact that Snake Eater stories in reality an origin story and let it be the first chapter to take place following the timeline of the events toldbeing set in 1964.

Asked by IGN USAa Konami spokesperson explained:

«We chose Snake Eater because it tells the story of the birth of Big Boss (Naked Snake), who is the starting point of the saga of Metal Gear.»

But it’s not just this: apparently, Snake Eater it was the game that fans wanted a remake of mostaccording to Konami.

«Another reason is that many fans have asked us for a remake of this game for a very long time” the spokesperson added.

What engine does it use?

Metal Gear Solid Delta is being developed with Unreal Engine 5.

The development is being carried out by a Konami’s internal teamwhich still includes some of the original developers of Metal Gear Solidwho remained in the company after Kojima’s departure (others instead followed him to his new software house).

It’s difficult to say whether these are some of the same people who have already worked (and are working) on it Master Collection.

In addition, to support them there is Virtuousa Singaporean company that deals with video game development and design, which in the past has also worked on titles such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider (art, level design, gameplay) or the remake of Demon’s Souls (introductory cinematic sequence).

On the company’s official website we discover that it also lent its services to the Switch porting of The Outer Worldsto the remastering of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age it’s at Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (gameplay, art, level design alongside Respawn Entertainment).

We read that the team also collaborated on Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West And The Callisto Protocoleven if we don’t know in the development of which areas.

Is Kojima involved?

No. Hideo Kojima founded his Kojima Productions as an independent software house after his farewell to Konami and is not involved in this project.

Likewise, art director Yoji Shinkawa is not involvedin turn working with the new software house.

Probably, however, members of the original team could be mentioned in the credits of Deltasince we are talking about a faithful remake in which the basis of the writing and a good part of the game design would remain Kojima’s, while the art direction, the creation of vehicles, weapons and mecha, as well as the character design, would remain up to Shinkawa’s signature.

During the appointment with Metal Gear Hotline, the producer and Konami veteran Noriaki Okamura confirmed that the company is keeping the front door openidea of future other remakes of Metal Gear After Delta.

Everything, of course, will depend on how things go with Snake Eater. But it is also true that the success or otherwise of the remake of Snake Eater it will also depend on what product Konami manages to pull out of the hat, so let’s hope that the works go well and can live up to the name of the original game.
