An Ellen Ripley at the Lido! It has in fact been announced that during the next edition of the Venice International Film Festival the actress of the Alien saga Sigourney Weaver will receive the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

The decision was taken by the Board of Directors of the Biennale, chaired by Pietrangelo Buttafuocowhich has adopted the proposal of the Director of the Exhibition Alberto Barbera. The actress and star of the saga will therefore be present and a great protagonist of the next scheduled event from 28 August to 7 September 2024.

«I am truly honored to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from the Venice Biennale – said Sigourney Weaver in accepting the proposal – This award is a privilege that I share with all the directors and collaborators I have worked with over the years. I proudly accept this recognition, which also celebrates all those who have contributed to bringing these films to life.».

These are the reasons of the director Alberto Barbera: «An actress of Sigourney Weaver’s caliber has few rivals. With an important theatrical education, she has conquered the general cinema audience with Alien, by Ridley Scottquickly becoming an emblematic figure of the 80s, during which she coined the image of an unprecedented heroine for the action genre, capable of successfully holding her own against the male models who until then had dominated epic and adventure cinema. Not content with having paved the way for numerous other epigones, the actress continued in her incessant search for her own identity that was constantly called into question, through choices that range from genre films to comedies, from auteur films to children’s films, escaping the labels that would have wanted her confined to the victorious icon of the Reagan era».

It’s still: “In the role of an authentic collaborator rather than a simple tool moldable by the hands of a director, she contributed to the success of films on James Cameron, Paul SchraderPeter Weir, Michael Apted, Roman Polanski, Ivan Reitman, Mike Nichols, Ang Lee and many others, each time managing to leave their charismatic presence with the indelible mark of a complex, sometimes contradictory, always authentic figure. Gifted with a great temperament, capable of moving delicately but without fragility, she has imposed an image of a confident and determined, dynamic and tenacious woman, not without letting a feminine sensitivity of intense magnetism shine through, with ever-changing nuances. The Golden Lion for her lifetime achievement is a dutiful recognition for a star who has been able to build bridges between the most sophisticated auteur cinema and films that dialogue with the public in a frank and original way, without ever giving up being herself».

Curiously, at the Lido you will also find the same Peter Weir mentioned by Alberto Barbera: the director of Dead Poets Society was also honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In recent weeks, we recall, it was also announced that the jury president of the next exhibition will be Isabelle Huppert and the godmother of the edition will be Sveva Alviti.
