James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC universe continues its fascinating evolution, with an ever-growing list of films, live-action and animated TV series. One of the latest updates to arrive from overseas concerns the television show starring Green Lantern, Lanterns.
There is a lot of attention towards the TV series, since it is the very first live-action product of the newborn DCU led by Marvel alum James Gunn. Consisting of eight episodes, the show was recently confirmed as an integral part of the main channel HBO together with the Harry Potter series. And, finally, he got an official synopsis, which clarifies once and for all which comic series Lanterns will be inspired by.
According to the description, the protagonists will be the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart engaged in solving “a dark mystery on Earth, as they investigate a murder in the heartland of America“. The rest of the details regarding the plot and its protagonists are still a mystery. However, the most attentive and passionate about the character, they have guessed which comics the TV series will be inspired by.
This is “Hard-Traveling Heroes”, released in the 70s and created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams to revive the subdued sales of Green Lantern comics in those years. “Hard-Traveling Heroes” is credited with having revitalized the characters of Hal and Oliver, normalizing superheroes tackling darker real-life issues. This would not only set Lanterns apart from every other previous, ill-fated attempt to give us a live-action version of Green Lantern, but it would honor one of the most beloved stories in the canon comic.
Now, with the synopsis finally available and the confirmation that the TV series will end first on HBO and then on Max, we just have to wait further developments regarding casting official. Who will play Hal and John? Many fans have expressed their desire to see Patrick Schwarzenegger in the role of a young Green Lantern… who knows!
