Rome, 25 June 2024 – International cooperation on migrants has taken a significant step forward thanks to the meeting between the Tunisian National Observatory on Migration (Onm) and the International Center for the Development of Migration Policies for the Mediterranean Region (Icmpd). The meeting, which took place in Tunis, saw the participation of the director general of the ONM, Ahlem Hammami, the director general of the ICMPD, Julien Simon, and the head of the Tunis office, Lamine Abed. The meeting focused on cooperation programs and projects implemented within the framework of the ProGres-migration programme, with a particular focus on migration governance.

Migrants, the collaboration project between Onm and ICMPD

One of the key projects discussed was the national census of international migration Tunisia-Hims, developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics. This census represents an important step forward in collecting accurate data and understanding migrant flows affecting Tunisia. Another notable initiative is the creation of Migration Network computer system, an advanced platform that brings together all data related to migration and migrants. This tool is intended for strengthen the governance of migratory data, offering precise and up-to-date information at national, regional and international levels. The implementation of this system is seen as a crucial element for improving migration management and developing evidence-based policies.

During the meeting, Ahlem Hammami underlined the importance of the role of the Onm in coordinating the management of the migration issue with various interested structures. Furthermore, you highlighted how the observatory contributes through studies, research and data analysis, promoting a deeper understanding of migratory phenomena and more effective management. Julien Simon also expressed his opinion appreciation for the efforts made by the Onm, reiterating the ICMPD’s availability to provide technical support and assistance. In addition, he emphasized the importance of institutional capacity building, exchange of expertise and good practices as essential tools for ensure better migration governance. Finally, Simon highlighted the need to collaborate closely with all partners involved to address migration challenges in a coordinated and effective way.

The meeting confirmed the mutual commitment of the two organizations to promote more inclusive and evidence-based migrant management. The cooperation between the ONM and the ICMPD therefore represents a significant step towards more robust and integrated migration governance in the Mediterranean region.
