This morning, around 10 am, the flood of the Sporzana torrent damaged the main methane gas pipeline. The steel pipe with a diameter of 80 mm, in which the gas flows at medium pressure (around 4 bar), was dragged by the flood which caused a significant dispersion of gas.
Immediately arriving on site, the Ireti teams found that the pipeline could not be repaired except by closing the road valves located upstream and downstream of the damage. To allow for repair work all utilities in Val Sporzana will remain unpowered, including the town of Piantonia.
The expected times for the complete reactivation are currently difficult to quantify: the pipeline was cut in the middle of the stream and it is difficult to access it. As soon as the repairs are completed, the procedure, to protect the safety of end customersinvolves a house-to-house passage to close the supply valves which will be followed, at the end of the repair activities already underway, by the new gas connection of the network and a new passage to the individual users to reactivate the service.
The Ireti company asks all customers affected by the interruption to preventively close the valves located upstream of the meter to avoid further problems.
