Visitors increasingly find themselves dissatisfied with the service offered in the urban centers they choose for their holidays. A recent example concerns a young man who, ordering a coffee in a bar in Florence, was charged an unexpected additional cost on his receipt.

The receipt has become a hot topic on social media. Whether it’s an expensive meal or a cut-price drink, many are driven to share details of the costs online. This becomes a way to express your disappointment or brag about a deal, while also giving others an idea of prices in different tourist locations, especially in charming cities like Florence, where it is not unusual to find surprisingly high bills.

The problem of high costs in tourist destinations

Italy is universally celebrated for its beauty, and that’s no exaggeration. The cities of art, small villages and natural wonders are envied by the whole world. Florence, in particular, is a jewel of great cultural and artistic value, which annually attracts millions of visitors from all over the globe.

However, when talking about tourist destinations, one cannot ignore the high level of prices, often well above the national average. There is also a distinction in the prices applied by the managers of local businesses between residents and tourists, with the latter frequently penalized by increased rates. Thanks to social media, these issues have become more evident.

The strange case of coffee in Florence, the supplement

An unusual event recently happened in a Florentine café, sparking curiosity online. A young man, entering a cafe for breakfast, headed to the counter to order a pastry, but was promptly directed to pay first with the receipt, a usual norm in crowded cities. When paying, in addition to the pastry, he ordered an American coffee, an espresso diluted with a little water. Because of this addition, the price of coffee was raised by ten cents. However, that wasn’t the only extra you had to pay.

When the customer asked the barista to add cold milk to the coffee, the response was unexpected: he had to return to the cash register for a new receipt and a forty cent surcharge for the milk. In the end, breakfast cost more than expected, with increases for water (10 cents) and milk (40 cents), even though the prices of items were reasonable (1.30 euros for pastry and 1.20 euros for coffee).
