A 2-year-old boy and his 20-year-old mother – and not 16 as initially emerged – died in a road accident which occurred at dawn today 23 June on the Palermo-Sciacca, near the junction for Giacalone in the province of Palermo. Another girl on board with the victims was reportedly injured in serious condition. Driving the Fiat Punto, in which all the people involved in the accident were, was a woman who, according to the police, had a blood alcohol level higher than the permitted level.

The victims

The victims of the accident are Selma El Mouakit, 20 years old, and her son Abed Rahim Gharsallah. Also in the car were Miram Canale, 23 years old, and Chiara Irmana, 21 years old. The two injured were hospitalized, one with a reserved prognosis. According to initial reconstructions, the girls had spent the night in Palermo and were returning to Partinico. The two victims lived in San Giuseppe Jato, where the mayor explains how the girl is from a Moroccan family who has been integrated into the town for years: «The grandparents arrived 40 years ago. The grandmother of the girls who ended up in hospital has always been a domestic worker. A decent person like his grandfather, who works in the markets. They are all very well known and respected in the village.”
