TERNI – «The attempted assault on a judge by a prisoner that he had to be interrogated in prison is a particularly serious episode. Measures to improve the situation are being evaluated safety of magistrates and prosecutors in interrogation rooms and some initiative will be taken both immediately and in the future.”
The PGeneral Prosecutor Sergio Sottani has just been released from Sabbione prison. He wanted to personally verify, within the scope of his duties of supervision and control over the safety of the district magistrates, the conditions in which his colleagues operate during the hearings inside the Terni penitentiary.
In recent days the judge, busy with the interrogation of an Italian prisoner, has risked being hit with the handle of a very sharp plastic fork hidden by the man between the fingers of one hand.
In the images you can see the thug, not new to episodes of this kind, jumping on the judge and only the prompt intervention of the staff prison police averted the worst.
The investigations into the episode are the responsibility of the public prosecutor’s office at the Florence court, promptly activated upon notification from the public prosecutor’s office of Terni. As for the perpetrator of the attempted attack, he is still in cell in Sabbione but could be transferred from Dap in another prison.
Accompanied by director, Luca Sardella and the commander, Fabio Gallo, the prosecutor Sergio Sottani he had the opportunity to personally verify how the prisoner, the judge and the prosecutor are too close in the interrogation room: “A solution will be found – assures the attorney general – and in this sense we will also involve the department of penitentiary administration”.
After the visit to Sabbione Sergio Sottani went to prefecturewhere the meeting of the Committee for public order and safety was scheduled which also discussed the unfortunate episode of a few days ago.
The common will is to find immediate solutions gensuring greater distance between prisoners and magistrates during interrogations in prison.
Before leaving the city Sottani went to the courthouse, where he met the judge victim of the attempted assault and the new president of the court Emilia Fargnoli to show them our closeness after the serious episode.
The visit to Sabbione, limited only to checking the spaces intended for interrogations, after yet another position taken on an unsustainable situation: «It has gotten much worse in the Umbrian penitentiaries – reiterates Sergio Sottani – where the problems of staff shortages have increased . Not only are the penitentiary policemen missing but also all those figures, psychologists and social workers, who must deal with recovery and rehabilitation projects for detained people. There is also a lack of medical personnel with specific skills for the care of prisoners with mental disorders.” In recent days, Sottani has once again underlined how the Rems has not yet been established in Umbria to accommodate convicts with mental and socially dangerous disorders.
