Satnam Singh’s widow, Soni, today obtained a residence permit for “special protection” reasons. In the meantime, she has left the house where she lived with her deceased husband and is staying with some of her fellow countrymen.
No emotion shows on Soni’s face. She remains impassive as some paperwork passes in front of her to sign to obtain the residence permit for “special protection” reasons. The Ministry of the Interior is currently awaiting the technical deadlines and the authorization from the judicial authority, after which the woman will receive the document required pursuant to Article 18 of the Consolidated Law on Immigration. With her gaze lowered and without saying a word, Soni left the passport office of Palazzo M, in Latina this afternoon around 3pm. Accompanying her this time too is Hardeep Kaursecretary of the Flai CGIL of Latina and Frosinone.
No celebration, no smile but just a lot of despair and suffering. “We usually wish the person who manages to obtain these documents well – comments Hardeep – but this time there was little to celebrate.” In fact, Sony obtained that document only after seeing her husband die before her eyes. Once Soni leaves her office she finds several journalists and photographers waiting for her and she bursts into tears. “Up until that moment he hadn’t let any emotion show, he seemed like ice – says the trade unionist – but as soon as she noticed that they were photographing her she panicked and started crying.”
The new house
Yesterday Soni left the house where he lived for a couple of years with her husband Satman. Some of her compatriots offered her hospitality and she therefore left that house, now linked to terrible memories, to also distance herself from reporters. The homeowners, who yesterday they said they saw Satnam unloaded from a van together with his wife, they had also made themselves available to host her in their home.

“You can stay here with us if you feel calmer, we are available and we can also give you our daughter’s bedroom.” The choice instead fell elsewhere but the trade unionist Hardeep Kaur asks the institutions not to abandon this woman and continue to follow her in all ways. “I learned that you are now in another house hosted by some of your compatriots – she adds – but I will continue to monitor the situation because I don’t want her to isolate herself and then be abandoned. Soni definitely needs psychological support and to be followed by social services, we will continue to ensure that this happens as soon as possible”.
