Many things are happening in the terrifying world of horror (especially many are born remake-sequel-reboot of some of his classics), and some concern The exorcistthe film that has firmly held the scepter of since the 70s most terrifying horror film of all time. Speaking of the cult film about possessions directed by William Friedkin, Universal has announced the release date of the new film about the Exorcist – which will be directed by none other than Mike Flanagan – , the father of Midnight Mass. The film, produced by venerable horror studio Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, will hit theaters Friday, March 13, 2026. Flanagan’s version is described as a “radical revisitation” of the chilling franchise which also boasts a (monstrously underrated) two-season TV spinoff of the same name. No plot details have yet been released.

The only confirmed news – and confirmed by both the director and the producers – is that the new film will not be a sequels linked to any previous film in the franchise about the demon Pazusu and that will chart a new course for the same. The latest chapter of the saga, produced last year, presented as a direct sequel to the original and titled The Exorcist – The Believer had seemed promising, due to the direction of David Gordon Green who in just a few years had managed to bring the saga of Halloween. Believer (this is the English title) grossed only 65.5 million dollars in the United States and Canada and 136.2 million dollars worldwide. A huge defeat if we consider that Universal and Blumhouse had bought back the rights to the Exorcist from Morgan Creek for four hundred million dollars in July 2021. David Gordon Green declined to direct the next chapter.

The new Exorcist will be produced by Trevor Macy for Intrepid Pictures and by Flanagan through his new production company Red Room Pictures. The project marks the fourth collaboration between Flanagan and Blumhouse. Flanagan wrote and directed Oculus – the reflection of Evil (2013), The terror of silence (2016) e Ouija: The Origin of Evil (2016). In addition to his most famous film Doctor Sleepinspired by The ShiningFlanagan also created other jewels such as The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass And Gerald’s Game as well as last year’s acclaimed Netflix miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher.
