Inflation at 0.8%, shopping cart more convenient

In May 2023, inflation exceeded 7 percent, while for the month of May this year, Istat confirmed an increase in inflation of 0.2% on a monthly basis and of 0.8% on an annual basis. . In short, you can hear the screeching of the brakes, after a ride that seemed endless.

STABILIZATION
«In May – commented the Institute of Statistics – inflation remained at the same level as April (+0.8%). The stabilization of the growth rate is mainly due to the easing of tensions on the prices of processed food goods (+1.8% from +2.5% in April) and of some types of services, from transport to housing, whose effects compensate for the weakening of deflationary pressures coming from the energy sector”. The “shopping cart” also slows down (+1.8% in May). Core inflation stands at +2%.

THE DETAIL
More in detail, the prices of food, home and personal care goods, the so-called shopping cart, slowed down on a trend basis from +2.3% in April to +1.8% in May, as well as those of products with high purchase frequency, which went from +2.6% in April to +2.5% in May. The stability of inflation, Istat always communicates, is the result of contrasting trends in different spending aggregates. While on the one hand the prices of processed food goods are slowing down, as mentioned, of transport-related services (which went from +2.7% in April to +2.4% in May) and of housing-related services (from +2.8% to +2.6%), on the other hand the decline in prices of unregulated energy attenuates (from -13.9% to -13.5%) and that of regulated energy prices stops (from -1 .3% to +0.7%). Finally, the prices of recreational, cultural and personal care services accelerate, even if only slightly.

At the top of the top ten of the most expensive cities in Italy, according to the ranking drawn up by the National Consumer Union, are Parma and Rimini, with inflation at 1.6%, which translates into additional spending on a per year equal to an average of 435 euros. Venice is bad, where the annual increase in spending stands at 369 euros per family. Then Florence, which with +1.4% inflation exposes it to an additional expense of 366 euros per year for an average family.

THE INCREASE
In this nightmarish top ten there are also cities such as Cagliari (here we spend 312 euros more per year due to inflation), Padua (+308 euros), Trieste (+293 euros), Milan and Naples (+286 euros ). Finally, in Rome, inflation increased the average annual expenditure of families by 233 euros.

At the top of the ranking of the most “expensive” regions, with an annual inflation of +1.3%, Veneto stands out, recording an average burden per family of 324 euros on an annual basis. Tuscany follows, where the growth in prices of 1.1% implies a surge in the cost of living equal to 272 euros. Emilia Romagna came third (+0.9% and +237 euros). On the contrary, Aosta, Campobasso and Ancona stand out in the ranking of the most virtuous cities in Italy. The best regions, even in deflation, are Valle d’Aosta (-0.8%, equal to a saving of 208 euros) and Molise (-0.4%, -83 euros). Abruzzo is in third position, with no change.
