For the third consecutive year and with a time of 14’41″31, Borgo Cappuccini wins the 55th edition of the Barontini Cup, among the most evocative races of the Livorno rowing season. The competition, which took place at night on Saturday 15 June along the Medici ditches, saw the classification of the Venice in second place and theArdence to third, therefore confirming the podium for 2023.

What’s new in this edition
Despite the rain and the coincidence with the Italy-Albania match at the European Championships, the fascinating competition that characterizes the Livorno summer took place successfully. Among the novelties of this year, the participation of three gozzi in ten con female crewout of the race, who challenged each other on the identical course as the men and who bear the names of Fortezza Vecchia, Fortezza Nuova and 4 Moors.
The homage to Cosimo I dei Medici

Ours, in fact, is the only one of the Italian regions that has a 450-year-old root that derives precisely from the presence of Cosimo; no other region has this feature. With this volume I wanted to pay homage to him on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of his death”.

The route of the Barontini Cup
The time trial route along the Medici ditches of Livorno is long in total 3,200 meterswith departure and arrival in front of the Scali delle Cantine.
The race itinerary then touched on the Scali del Pontino, Scali Reali, Scali Rosciano, Darsena Vecchia, Ponte Nuovo, Scali D’Azeglio, Scali Aurelio Saffi, Voltone (under Piazza della Repubblica), the penultimate stage before the arrival of the boats.
History
There first edition of the Barontini Cup was organized in 1966 from the “San Marco Pontino” PCI Section and from the Amici de l’Unità association to remember the partisan commander from Livorno Ilio Barontinimember of the Constituent Assembly and Senator of the Republic, who died in a tragic road accident, just outside Florence, on 22 January 1951.
The competitive rivalry between the districts is still very strong today and every year the participation is increasingly enthusiastic, colorful and participated by spectators and supporters who, leaning out of the “shoulders” to cheer on their favorites, they live the race side by side with the rowers.

Before the Barontini Cup, the Edda Fagni Trophy was also held, this year dedicated to Uberto Mondolfi: the mayor of Livorno violently forced to resign by the fascists in 1922.
The ones who challenged each other were the 4-oared gozzo boats for the women’s and junior categories in a path of 980 meters departing from Piazza Cavour and arriving at the Delle Cantine airport.
The district won in both categories Borgo Cappuccinihistorically one of the most linked to its maritime origins.
