(AGENPARL) – Fri 21 June 2024 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP BASEL 2024 – ITALY OF THE WOMEN’S SWORD IN TRIUMPH: IT’S GOLD
CONTINENTAL AFTER 17 YEARS! BRONZE FOR THE MEN’S FOIL TEAM
BASEL – Italy’s women’s swordsmanship is European champion for 17 years
after the last time, while the blue men’s foil wins the
bronze. It gives many emotions and two more medals for Italy – and they are
nine so far in total, with first place strengthened in the medal table – la
fourth day of the 2024 European Championships in Basel, the first
dedicated to team competitions, with a historic gold and a third place that is
son of a great desire for redemption.
Alberta Santuccio, Mara Navarria, Rossella Fiamingo and Giulia Rizzi
they sign the Italian triumph in the women’s sword, overcoming in one
beautiful final Hungary 38-31 and bringing the Tricolore back to the
highest step of the podium as has not happened since Ghent 2007 (then
Boscarelli, Del Carretto, Cascioli and Moellhausen rejoiced). There
training led by Technical Commissioner Dario Chiadò, who had
skipped the round of 16 due to their Ranking, they were exceptional
from dawn to dusk of the competition. Italy, in fact, dominated
the quarter-final against Israel, winning 45-15. The masterpiece
of the blue swordsmen, however, reached the semi-final against the
France: an assault that the girls from CT Chiadò have been conducting since
principle, not giving up anything, with an impressive choral performance
which involved the entire quartet, achieving success by 32-31.
In the final there was a fight against Hungary for the gold: Navarria and
Fiamingo made a relay guaranteeing the usual experience and
effectiveness, Santuccio pushed hard as always and Rizzi took the lead
responsibility of the last fraction leading Italy to triumph with
result of 38-31. A victory that is worth double, because it gives to the team
of the blue swordsmen the certainty of 1st place in the world ranking,
with which he will arrive at the Paris Olympic Games.
“_It just didn’t seem possible to get to be the number 1 team in the world
a few months ago, we deservedly achieved it, with our path
in the Cup, and we confirm ourselves up there by winning this European Championship which
we have wanted for years, immense joy for our team. It’s a
historic result for Italy of women’s swordsmanship, and we are proud
that we, two Sicilians and two Friulians, have obtained it, which we now aim to
Parigi_”, the words of Rossella Fiamingo at the end of the race, enthusiastic and
smiling with her companions.
A bronze medal, however, for the CT men’s foil team
Stefano Cerioni. The individual gold and silver medalists Tommaso Marini and Alessio
Foconi, Guillaume Bianchi and Filippo Macchi took the podium
dominating the match for the third step against Poland, which was defeated
45-25 after an always commanding match. In their race course, allowed
to the quarter-finals by right of Ranking, the Azzurri had
debuted against Belgium, winning by authority with a score of
45-28. In the semifinals the foil players of the technical commissioner Cerioni
they had fought point for point against Hungary, who had however succeeded
coming out on top with the last thrust, with the result 44-43. The Italy of
men’s foil, first in a major competition after retiring
forced by captain Daniele Garozzo, however, she was very good at
regroup and put all the desire for a medal on the platform,
winning it in the bronze final by overcoming Poland.
“_We will work on what we did wrong in the semi-final, because come on
mistakes are important to learn, but we are happy with this medal and
proud of our reaction which led us to compete in a
assault for third place at an excellent level. We know our worth
and we want to demonstrate it right through to the Olympic Games_”, the words of
Foconi & co. at the end of the competition.
Italy thus flies to 9 in the medal table for the national team, remaining there
firmly in command: 4 gold medals in the safe so far, 2
silver and 3 bronze. And tomorrow, on the fifth day, the Championships
Basel 2024 European Championships continue with the team épée events
male and female sabre. The training of CT Dario’s swordsmen
Chiadò will be composed by Gabriele Cimini, Davide Di Veroli, Andrea
Santarelli and Federico Vismara, and will debut in the round of 16 (at
10.30 am) against the winner of Türkiye-Denmark. The quartet of
sabers of the Technical Commissioner Nicola Zanotti will line up instead
with Michela Battiston, Martina Criscio, Chiara Mormile and Irene Vecchi, e
(missed the round of 16 by right of Ranking) will be called upon to face
Spain in the quarter-finals at 12.40.
