Croatia’s European Championship begins with a heavy defeat, soundly beaten on its debut with a solid 3-0 in the presence of a Spain which was immediately in great form, which like hosts Germany sends a clear signal to all its rivals in the race to win continental title. In Berlin, in a red and white Olympiastadion (over 50 thousand Croatian fans in the stands), it was a monologue for the Red Furies, who built on their success in the first half by escaping to 3-0 with centers from Morata, Fabian Ruiz and Carvajal. In the second half Zlatko Dalić tried to shuffle the cards with substitutions (among others a dull Modrić out), but there was no reaction from his team, apart from the flag goal disallowed for Petković at the end. Qualifying for the round of 16 remains within reach, but to do so they will need at least a victory in the remaining two group matches against Albania (19 June in Hamburg) and Italy (24 June in Leipzig).
