Barbetti accident, analysis reveals artificial vitreous fibers “Harmful only if inhaled indoors and repeatedly”

Important news arrives regarding the accident last Saturday (June 8) at Barbetti cement plant in Gubbiowhere the release of woolly material occurred.

Harp And ASL Umbria 1after having received the results of the analyzes of the samples – taken both from a private home and inside the Barbetti cement plant – they excluding the presence of asbestos fibres and they have detected the presence of Artificial Glass Fibers (FAV)used in the soundproofing modules of the chimney, from where they had “snowballed” out following the mechanical failure of one of the silencer batteries.

The FAVs – as can be seen from the “Guidelines for the application of the legislation on exposure risks and prevention measures for health protection” – have health effects”only following respiratory inhalation, in a confined environment and especially if with continuous exposure“, as can happen for those employed in the processing of these fibres. Furthermore, there is no proven risk to health following ingestionas on the other hand has not been demonstrated even for asbestos fibres.

Furthermore, starting from the day of the accident, a repeated visual reconnaissance of the area most affected by the fallout began, which allowed us to identify a very specific area around the Suelle area. Following the detailed indications of Arpa and ASL it was therefore the order dated 8 June was revoked relating to the accident that occurred at the Barbetti cement plant, e a further one was issued, containing the following indications in detail:

  • To the Cementerie Barbetti Spa company, as owner of the cement plant in Corso Semonte, verification is requested through in-depth inspections of the areas affected by the fallout
  • The same company is asked to continue collecting the fibers with suitable means which involve suction using equipment equipped with a filter suitable for the fibres, avoiding any lifting and dispersion of the same.
  • The collected fibers must be managed as waste by an authorized company

Furthermore, in the ordinance to residents of the affected area – Via del Castello, Via di Suelle, Via della Croce, Via dei Lavatoi and Strada di Fonte Arcano for the last 400 meters – you are asked to carry out a thorough surface cleaning and washing of vegetables and fruit harvested in the aforementioned area with running water.
