NASA has several active scientific projects and is continuing to develop new missions, which will try to answer some unanswered questions related to our solar system. Among these there is a very particular mission, which could reveal new information regarding the Sun.
This mission is still unnamed and would aim to reach the edge of the solar system through a new type of probe, to observe the physical properties of theheliospherethe area of space influenced by the Sun which is a hundred times bigger of the distance existing today between the star and the Earth.
As crazy as it may seem to send a probe outside the system, considering that today we already have the two Voyager missions that have reached these distances, we must remember that the technology present on board the two probes is fifty years old and that it was not designed to study, for example, the effects of solar flares and of the solar wind beyond the orbit of Neptune.
Astronomers also remind us that the heliosphere constantly protects us from radiation and gamma-ray bursts arriving from various directions of the cosmos. So study our “shield” from interstellar space could be very interesting, also to understand other secrets of the universe.
One of the most interesting questions that astronomers are asking themselves at the moment is what it is the shape of our heliosphere. In fact, current models are not able to explain to us whether it has a spherical shape or more similar to that of a cloud.
Considering the size of the solar system, such a probe would obviously travel for entire decades before reaching interstellar space, with a significant increase in costs and the effort that engineers would have to spend to maintain contact with the probe. However, the success of the New Horizons probe, which in the space of less than 10 years has achieved Plutoin 2015, demonstrated that with modern technologies travel can be faster and that probes can reach the edges of the solar system faster.
