Liguria, yes to the coordination plan for the construction of crematoria

The regional council has approved the regional coordination plan for the construction of crematoria with the aim of offering the population an efficient, homogeneous and widespread cremation plant service, while ensuring the protection of health and the environment. “The regional Coordination Plan for the Construction of Crematoriums – explains the Health Councilor Angelo Gratarola -, based on the statistical-demographic analysis carried out, does not currently foresee the need for the construction of new crematorium plants or expansions of existing ones . However, if the municipalities demonstrate the need, on the basis of the statistical-demographic data relating to the resident population, mortality rate and choice of crematorium by the citizens of the area, to create new facilities or modify or expand existing ones, the Plan will define the ‘Authorization process”.

Following a positive opinion from the Region based on the criteria reported in the Plan, the Municipality will be able to proceed to obtain the further opinions and authorizations necessary based on the regulations in force. If requests for new installations, expansions or in any case modifications that lead to potential effects on polluting emissions are received, with the consequent need to change the Plan, the same must be subjected to verification of its suitability for Strategic Environmental Assessment. The Plan also establishes guidelines relating to minimum indications for the evaluation of health aspects for cremation plants in the area and establishes the plant requirements, emission performance and management indications for cremation plants. The Plan will be adapted to the provisions that may intervene with future national legislation on technical aspects.
