Milan, 14 June 2024 – Milan gup Ileana Ramundo has 13 defendants sent to trial in various capacities on charges of negligent disaster in relation to thefire of the Moro Tower, the skyscraper in via Antonini 32/34 devastated by flames on 29 August 2021. Four defendants excluded, two firefighters and two employees of the Moro corporate constellation who, as ascertained, had no role in the construction of the tower, nor any subsequent responsibility.
Those indicted for trial
Between sent to trial there are the builder Alberto Moro, his wife Stefania Grunzweig, administrator of Polo srl, client and seller of the apartments, five managers of Zambonini spa, who took care of the work on the “sails” of the facade, including the legal representative. At trial, then, the administrator of the company that marketed those Larson panels in Italy produced by the Spanish Alucoil, which counts among those indicted for trial the legal representative and an export manager.
The acquitted
However, the two firefighters Mario Abate and Luciano Propana were acquitted, who gave the “favorable opinion” with which Polo obtained the “fire prevention certificate” in 2011, the technical manager of the tower construction site Crescenzo Panico and Giacomo Passera, one of the managers of Zambonini.
The alleged irregularities
In requesting a trial for the accused, the prosecution representative highlighted all the alleged irregularities in the design and construction of the skyscraper starting from those relating to the certification of the materials used for facade panels that caught fire. “The construction proposed as the most innovative and technological is actually a paradox because it turned out to be the most dangerous”, is the meaning of the prosecutor’s words.
According to the investigations, the the fire broke out on one of the balconies of the building because of one lit cigarette thrown away and the skyscraper turned into a “torch”. The “ACP panels”, identical to the “Larson Pe”, were also used for “the 2017 Greenfell Tower disaster in London”, where 72 people died. Another similar fire occurred last February in Valencia, where a 14-storey building caught fire.
The first hearing
The hearing will open before the sixth criminal section of the Court in monocratic composition next September 30th.
