I didn’t know I was mayor. No, it’s not a new reality show. But this is what happened in the small municipality of Cibiana di Cadorein the province of Bellunowhere in the last local elections, on 8 and 9 June, he was elected as mayor Sandro Gerardi68 years old, from Venice, who ran “by chance” without having held rallies and electoral campaigns. Gerardi’s, in fact, was a list “owl“, made specially to lower the quorumthus avoiding the hypothesis of commissionership and help the outgoing mayor, Mattia Gosetti, in the reconfirmation. But when the polls were closed surprise: the list of the 68 year old Venetian – “Cibiana due” – took 104 votesequal to 55% against them 85that is, the 45%, from the “We for Cibiana” list of the outgoing mayor. Of course, the turnout definitely didn’t help. The small Belluno town has plenty of voters 519but the voters were only 195equal to 38%.

But the new mayor is a tourist: 68 years old, a retired banker, he spent his holidays in Cibiana. “Replacing a person who was working well is not easy – Gerardi told the local press – I have to learn and I answer mine consciousnessto Italian law and to this beautiful country and its inhabitants. I want the best for them.”

News, that of the surprise election of the “tourist”, has spread quickly throughout the country which has many electoral districts only one. And the loser? Gosetti initially chose the path of silence but then he responded on social media, in a Facebook post: “This is how mine ends adventure as mayor of Cibiana di Cadore. I would like to sincerely thank all those who have supported me in these years and especially in this last difficult period helpedsupported and showed me a lot affection. Therefore, humbly, I take a step back“. The outgoing mayor had been in the city administration since the last elections in 2019.
