ALBANIAN SPEZZANO – A malicious fire was set this afternoon in a classroom at the Spezzano Albanese Middle School. Fortunately, the damage was negligible, also because the structure was left by the students on March 31st so that it could be demolished and rebuilt thanks to a loan of over 5 million euros. And this is why the building has been completely cleared out while waiting for the works to take shape.
Perhaps for these reasons, aware that they would not be disturbed, unknown, in the early afternoon of today, while in the Arbëreshe town the community is busy with the municipal elections, they entered through a secondary door. Having chosen a classroom on the ground floor, they started the fire with sheets of paper. The smoke quickly invaded the room and the flames affected the window shutters which slowly overheated and blackened. The alarm was raised by some passerby or resident who noticed smoke coming out of the aforementioned windows.
The Carabinieri of the local station with the Municipal Police immediately arrived on site. The Castrovillari Fire Brigade and a Norm car from the Compagnia di San Marco Argentano arrived next.
Entry to the building was difficult due to heavy smoke billowing throughout the facility. The firefighters, in fact, had to use oxygen masks to reach the classroom affected by the fire. The work continued until around 7pm.
There remains the bitter awareness of a stunt that took time away from professionals who on Sunday afternoon had to remedy the stupidity of a gesture, perhaps done for fun. Thus tying up a team that, instead, could have been used for more important interventions.
