BRINDISI – At 10.30pm there were 50 operations waiting and 70 already carried out and the switchboard continued to ring. Today, Sunday 9 June, was a busy day for the firefighters of the Brindisi area: expanses of scrub that had grown in uncultivated and abandoned land were set on fire. Today’s over 35 degrees, the sirocco wind and the dry grass are the deadly mix that in the space of a few minutes transforms a small fire into large fires that are difficult to put out. The problem is always the same and occurs every summer season: the ordinances that require the land to be kept clean are not respected and enforced and when the grass becomes dry and the field becomes a receptacle for animals and insects of all kinds, someone thinks good to clean the land by setting fire, without taking into account the consequences: damage to any trees, dangers to visibility, damage to the environment, to health, possible waste fire (very often abandoned land is transformed into landfills).
One of today’s many fires which required the intervention of the firefighters broke out in a large expanse of dry grass that runs along the extension of via Croce Rossa in San Pietro Vernotico, in the Artisti district: the flames grazed a home, the residents tried to keep them away by throwing water with a hose. Smoke filled the entire area. A local police patrol went to the scene requesting the intervention of the firefighters. But before this there were 42 “calls” waiting. On the same evening, other fires broke out in San Pietro. As well as throughout the province. It is always worth remembering that one of the most serious risks in keeping firefighters busy in fires that could have been avoided if only the grass had been cut before it became dry, is that they might not arrive in time to some accident or serious event to whose life is at risk.
