ISRAEL – Noemi Di Segni (UCEI): Which nation would not fight to free its citizens?

We publish a statement from the president of the UCEI, Noemi Di Segni, on the recent release of four Israeli hostages

«The Italian Jewish communities join in the feelings of emotion and joy for the liberation of the hostage boys Noa, Argamani, Shlomi Ziv, Andrey Kozlov and Almog Meir Jan, remembering that 120 hostages are still in the hands of Hamas, including children and elderly people, for whose speedy release is hoped for. A pride and an impulse of hope combined with the excruciating pain of the fall of one of the officers involved in the heroic operation Arnon Zamora – to whose family and teammates we express our condolences. Once again that face of terror has been revealed which uses civilians and their homes and schools to hide Israeli hostages for months, shielding themselves from moral scruples and the lacerating dilemmas of sparing the lives of others. Terrorism that uses kidnapped civilians to negotiate political rights of its own people and then demand that international, parliamentary and academic assemblies vote to affirm some and destroy others. Which people, which State, which Nation in the world would not take action and fight to free its citizens? Which nation is under accusation for defending its territory after a massacre? The Ucei appeals to the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni and to the upcoming European Parliament to become fully aware and work towards a real and loyal fulfillment of the role that the UN and its related agencies, including the Red Cross, must play. ‘UNRWA and UN Women, overwhelmed, financed and enslaved to terrorism and the domination of countries that obscure rather than promote justice and law, sadly including some European ones, also to the media which in these hours continues undaunted to spread false and distorted news about the hostages and those who held them in captivity will always respond with the truth and the determination to live. Even in Israel, even here in our communities. We are grateful to all the clear voices who in recent months have reiterated in every forum their commitment to the release of the hostages without giving in to slogans and distortions.”
