LIVORNO. Next to Parco Levante the cranes have started working on the square, leveling the ground for the two shops of the future. The surface areas have decreased, but the plan has remained the same: two sales points for non-food products will be built here. And you only need to walk a few meters to find yourself in front of the other works in progress: the one at the entrance to the shopping center for the petrol stations and the one at Scopaia, for the new supermarket. Three, therefore, in open construction sites within a few meters. And here, at Scopaia, the workers work at full speed. There are still details to be finalised, but the idea is one: “To open the store in September”. The director of the works, engineer Roberto Canessa, also says this, but he does not confirm the identity of the brand. After all, no one has wanted to do it yet, but it is now practically established that it is a Lidl store.
The new supermarket
As we know, a new Lidl supermarket will be built in the area of the former Canaccini brickyard, between Scopaia and Leccia, which will be spread over approximately 2 thousand square meters (one thousand sales surface area). And here, on the corner between via del Crocino and via di Collinaia, the work is progressing quickly. The supermarket building is already standing and the adjacent structure is being pulled up, starting to organize the spaces around it, including the greenery and hallways. As for the second building, it should also be used as a commercial space. Because “these are the forecasts of the new operational plan”, says Canessa. Although the old building permit envisaged a craft-type use, now the idea would be to build a restaurant and two shops that do not sell food products. At Scopaia, Canessa said some time ago, «the trucks will enter from via del Crocino, with construction measures aimed at reducing the visual impact of the loading and unloading areas. Then to the greenery already planned on the Via del Crocino side, trees will be added on the Collinaia street side and a new park for public use that will extend to the border with Brico”. Moreover, there was no shortage of protests against the construction of the new supermarket, complete with banners in plain sight. “Was it necessary?” someone said. “Another pour of concrete in the city,” others added. “We are not concreting any more than we already were,” the workers replied. The construction sites, in any case, are progressing and «the opening of the supermarket – reiterates Canessa – is scheduled for September».

Later in time, however, the construction site set up between via Nilde Iotti and via Erminia Cremoni, in the area of the so-called “New centre” will be delivered. Because here the finishing line for the works is set at the beginning of next year, 2025. Issued in 2010 to Unicoop Tirreno, ownership of the permit to build on that land then passed to the Fa real estate company of Rome. The bulldozers are in action there because two shops are being built which, again, will not sell food. That is, they will be non-food and could sell clothes, for example. Or objects of various types. It is still not clear because “at the moment we still don’t know the exact type of goods”, explains surveyor Fabio Gori, director of the works. «The intended use – the Municipality of Livorno states – is of a commercial nature and includes two medium-sized sales structures of 2,350 square meters and 1,850 square meters respectively (it is a single building divided into two real estate units, ed). However, compared to the original project, the variation (to the building permit, ed) of 2022 envisaged that the commercial building will have a covered surface area of approximately 225 square meters and a reduced volume of 18,900 cubic metres. However – continues the Municipality of Livorno – the access characteristics, the pedestrian and vehicular entrances to the parking areas and the greenery of the areas surrounding the entire lot have been kept unchanged”.
