Hamas seeks US guarantee for ceasefire with Israel

Hamas sources, cited by Haaretz, have communicated to the mediators of Qatar and Egypt the request for an official guarantee from the United States that Israel respects all the conditions of the agreement, including the request for a lasting ceasefire. These sources expressed pessimism about the negotiations due to internal disagreements in Israel over the comprehensive ceasefire.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, visiting Madrid, said that “Hamas has welcomed the ceasefire proposal in Gaza and we now await Israel’s response.” However, Hamas clarified that Shoukry’s statements do not represent their official response.
During a press conference with his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, Shoukry underlined the urgency of accepting the proposal for a ceasefire and exchange of prisoners and detainees. He criticized Israel’s practices that violate international law, appreciating Spain’s position in favor of the Palestinian cause. Albares reiterated Madrid’s support for President Biden’s proposal and underlined the importance of multilateral action for lasting peace in the region.
John Kirby, spokesman for the US National Security Council, said that “Hamas must accept the deal proposed by Israel,” calling it the best to end the conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the agreement includes a temporary ceasefire for the release of hostages and the elimination of Hamas, arguing that the war will continue to achieve these goals.
Shoukry reiterated Egyptian opposition to an Israeli presence at the Rafah border, highlighting the need for a Palestinian administration for the crossing to function. Albares highlighted the joint efforts of Spain and Egypt to open all land passages for humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Kibbutz Nirim has confirmed the death of Nadav Popplewell, a man with dual Israeli and British citizenship, who was kidnapped by Hamas and murdered while in captivity in the Gaza Strip. Popplewell was captured along with his mother, Channah Peri, who was released on November 24 as part of a temporary ceasefire agreement.
