There was no braking before the crash which destroyed the Rosignano motorway toll booth on the A12. As the traffic police images show, the Honda driven by the two German tourists travels quickly towards the toll booth, and then hits Marco Acciai’s stopped Fiat 500. Three victims were killed in the accident which occurred at 1pm yesterday 2 June: the two German tourists Robert Friendrich Fendt, 61 years old, his wife Maria Cornelia Schubert, 68 years old, and the Florentine Acciai, 21 years old. The latter was in the passenger seat at the time of the impact. His 29-year-old girlfriend, who was injured, was driving him. Five other people were not seriously injured in the accident: a 63-year-old woman, two little brothers aged three and six and the mother of 35. The toll collector, a 44-year-old from Cecina, was in shock and saw the car coming at him. ‘Honda of German tourists at high speed.

The investigations

It is not yet clear why Fendt did not even mention braking before the impact. The investigators’ first hypothesis is that the man may have had an illness. But a breakdown in the car, which prevented him from applying the brake, cannot be ruled out. The black Honda of the two German tourists hit the guard rail and then ended up straight on the cars queuing at the toll booth, heading towards Rome. The Honda then crashes onto the cage which is overturned. This in turn hits another car. Upon impact, the Honda hit the Fiat 500 with the two boys on board, overturning it. The ripple effect leads to a collision with another car.
