CATTOLICA The assault on ATM fIt ends badly, at least for one of the bandits who lost an arm, amputated through surgery.
The assault
The incident happened during the night between Friday and Saturday in an attempt to blow up the ATM of the Riviera Banca branch in the “Centro Diamante” in Cattolica. The criminals who used the classic “marmot” technique to blow up the banknote dispenser failed despite managing to insert the explosive charge into the device. But that explosion caused one of the bandits to suffer very serious injuries to his arm.
The “bang” occurred around 4 am when the thieves slipped the package with the explosive into the slot of the automatic teller machine. Something must have gone wrong with the trigger, so much so that one of the criminals, later identified, (a 36-year-old Romanian resident in Forlì), was hit by the explosion. Seriously injured in the arm, while his “colleagues” fled, the man remained on the ground where he was found by the police who rushed to the scene following the explosion. The foreigner, rescued by 118 personnel, was urgently transported to the “Bufalini” in Cesena where the doctors were unable to save the limb and were forced to amputate it. Then he was admitted to intensive care. Carabinieri investigations are underway to identify all the members of the gang. The damage to the branch structure was significant while, at the moment, it is not yet clear whether the criminals managed to remove the cash present in the safe.
Pictures
The investigators acquired surveillance footage to look for useful elements to frame those responsible. A random day was not chosen, as ATMs are often blown up on Fridays. The reason is clear: the devices are loaded with the money necessary to meet the requests for the whole weekend, even if the limit is much lower than in the past. But the criminals chose this night anyway. The searches are ongoing.
