Caltanissetta remembers the journalist Pippo Grosso. At the Angeli cemetery there is a funerary monument in memory of him – Il Fatto Nisseno

The city of Caltanissetta paid homage to Pippo Grosso on the occasion of the unveiling of the tombstone of the funerary monument dedicated to the journalist and publisher from Nisse who passed away in February 2023. Historic reporter of the Giornale di Sicilia, founder and director of Radio CL1, Pippo Grosso rests among the nisseni who contributed to writing a page in the history of Caltanissetta. On Friday morning at the Angeli cemetery the ceremony took place in Via delle Mimose, an area that the Municipality of Caltanissetta has designated for the burial of people who brought prestige to the city.

In January the municipal council had identified the area upon request produced by the spouse, Dr. Giovanna Alaimo, by virtue of a previous 2019 resolution which allocated for this purpose some areas of the ancient part of the cemetery.

The Administration, recognizing the great intellectual and moral qualities of the journalist and publisher from Nisse as well as keeping the work alive, has given a mandate to the Public Works Directorate to prepare the administrative documents for the assignment of an area. At the conclusion of the works, on Friday 24 May, the unveiling ceremony of the plaque was celebrated in which an epitaph in memory of Pippo Grosso was engraved with the Radio CL1 logo and the slogan that launched the first broadcasts into the airwaves in 1976: ” There’s something new in the air.”

As publisher and director of the radio, Pippo Grosso from 1976 to the present day has given many young people the opportunity to acquire the professionalism necessary to establish themselves as journalists in various newspapers. Furthermore, he gave free space to all the voices of the area with particular attention to social commitment and volunteering.

Many friends and fellow journalists were there to participate in the event. For the municipal administration, the mayor Roberto Gambino and the councilor for cemetery services Cettina Andaloro as well as the director of the Public Works Directorate, Giuseppe Tomasella and the director of the cemetery Salvatore Lombardo. After the blessing given by Father Gaetano Canalella, the mayor recalled Pippo Grosso’s commitment to the city as a free publisher sensitive to the problems of his community.

The monument made of marble was designed by the engineer Michele Valerio Falzone and the architect Marco Argentati.
