Our healthcare is falling apart. And this time it’s not a metaphor: a new episode of collapse, which could also have had tragic consequences for the patients, has shaken the Livorno hospital. A portion of the ceilingin fact, suddenly crumbled in oncology departmentputting the lives of the patients present in the adjacent room at risk, who fortunately remained unharmed together with the healthcare personnel (SEE Il Tirreno).
The collapse occurred on the evening of April 25, on the ground floor of the third pavilion, near the entrance reserved for employees in via Gramsci. It is notable that this same pavilion was scene of previous collapse episodeslike the one that occurred in the orthopedics area during the Easter holidays.
That the Livorno hospital has several structural problems it is now evident, so much so that several urgent building interventions are affecting and have affected different areas of the building. But the ASL reassures: «The hospital management apologizes ensuring maximum commitment to definitively completing the interventions in the shortest possible time, minimizing changes to the services offered and therefore the possible difficulties encountered by citizens”.
The union secretary Akram Abu Sneineh (FSI-USAe) complaint: «In the hospital in Viale Vittorio Alfieri there is one in progress very serious safety emergencygiven that despite our alarms, which remained completely unheeded, further collapses occurred in the same building where the orthopedics failure occurred, in this case oncology. It’s intolerable: If your son had been there, what would you have thought? Someone is underestimating the situation and it absolutely doesn’t seem like a wise and appropriate decision to me, given that the hospital is falling apart.
There is obviously something wrong with the system, at least a flaw in the controls, which absolutely did not work. Who took care of it? The director of the hospital, Luca Carneglia, must obviously step aside if he is not able to guarantee safety for patients and workers. If someone doesn’t know how to do their job, the only response they have to give is to go home. You don’t mess with people’s lives, even in this case a huge tragedy could have happened».
