Studio Ghibli awarded the honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024

The Cannes Film Festival has announced that an honorary Palme d’Or will be awarded to Studio Ghibli during the 2024 edition.

The Studio Ghibli will receive the Honorary Golden Palm during Cannes 2024: the Japanese studio will receive the important recognition during the festival, scheduled from 14 to 25 May.
The announcement underlined that this is the first time that the prize will be awarded not to a person, but to an institution.

The announcement of the festival

Iris Knobloch, president of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the cinema event, underlined: “Like all icons of the Seventh Art, these characters populate our imaginations with prolific and colorful universes and sensitive and engaging narratives. With Ghibli, Japanese animation is one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity“.

Toshio Suzuki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, underlined that he is honored and happy for the recognition awarded and thanked the Cannes Film Festival, recalling how forty years ago, together with Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, he founded the reality expert in animation to create high-level, high-quality projects for children and adults of all ages.
Suzuki then added that fans can now also visit the museum and theme park inspired by their films. Toshio then concluded by recalling: “Even though Miyazaki and I have aged considerably, I am certain that Studio Ghibli will continue to face new challenges, guided by the staff who will carry forward the spirit of the company. It would be my greatest pleasure if you can’t wait to find out what will happen in the future“.

A story full of successes

Studio Ghibli was born in the 1980s after the success of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, with the aim of producing animated films independently.
In 1988, Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro were released, while in 1992 Studio Ghibli financed Porco Rosso.
After exclusively producing the films of the two co-founders, the production company recently supported the works of Goro Miyazaki and Hiromasa Yonebayashi.
