GENOA – It is not the maccaia but a cloud of sand and dust coming directly from the Sahara desert the one that colored the Genoese skies yellow this afternoon.
The fine dust was carried by southern winds across the Sicilian Channel up to the Italian peninsula and for this very reason since yesterday the phenomenon has been reported in various southern regions such as Puglia and Calabria.
It is important to underline that it would be sand coming from the Sahara desert and transported to the Mediterranean basin by the winds, but not the larger parts, not real grains, but mainly dust light enough to be able to remain suspended in the air for days during which it travels even thousands of kilometers.
