The Messina challenges the league leaders Juventus Stabia, now one step away from promotion to Serie B, having to deal with an unfavorable tradition in direct matches played in Campania. In the thirteen previous championship matches the record is eight victories for the hosts, two draws and three successes for the guests, all very distant in time.

In 1972-73 the narrow victory (1-0) of the hosts thanks to the center of Malaman at 57′. A bitter season for Messina, which ended with relegation to D.
