“It’s the first time I’ve done this trip, I would like to get to the top, I’ve never been there.” The same goes for two other ski mountaineers Benoit Bordat, the 47-year-old Frenchman, resident in Annemasse, in Haute-Savoie, who died yesterday on the Gran Paradiso massif. The man, identified in the afternoon at the Aosta cemetery after the arrival of his family, was proceeding alone and no witnesses to the accident emerged. To the other two fastest ski mountaineers, who overtook him, he appeared tired.
The most accepted hypothesis is that Bordat slipped and ended up at the bottom of a steep canal. Starting from the village of Tignet, in Valsavarenche, he wanted to reach the southern pass of Herbetet: an exit of medium difficulty with a difference in altitude of just over 1,600 meters and which leads to an altitude of 3,300 metres.
The medical examiner found that the death was caused by trauma sustained in the fall. The conditions of the mountain were fair, with about 20 centimeters of fresh snow covering the surface below. The investigations are entrusted to the Alpine Rescue of the Entrèves financial police. The body was recovered by helicopter by the Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue Service.
