The Italian beach volleyball championship announced yesterday at the Lido Le Capannine in Catania the winners of the Sicilian stage reserved for the Under 20s. In the women’s draw, Ilaria Porporati and Giorgia Sambugaro, both originally from Padua, triumphed, while in the men’s draw the winners were Matteo Iurisci and Gabriel Marini da Costa. Porporati and Sambugaro beat Daria Castaldi and Valeria Priore 2-0 (21-13, 22-20) in the final.
Ilaria and Giorgia, thanks to their success in the Under 20 category, obtained the wild card to participate from today in the Catania stage of the 2024 Absolute Championship. On the lowest step of the podium, instead, climbed Francesca Carmaschi and Alessia Arienti who in the final for third and fourth place prevailed with a score of 2-0 (21-14, 21-19) over Lorenza Iurisci and Vivien Di Diego. The two girls from Padua are more than just a hope as far as this discipline is concerned.
Ilaria Porporati has just turned 18 and currently occupies seventh position in the ranking of Under 20 athletes, while in the overall ranking she is in 669th place: so far, in addition to the triumph in Catania, she has distinguished herself in the Italian Championship for Silver Clubs which held last April in Bologna with a more than deserved first position, without forgetting the lowest step of the podium a month earlier in the stage of the same event in Padua.
Giorgia Sambugaro is 19 years old and in the last two seasons she has made herself noticed in B1 with Volley Clodia: regarding beach volleyball, she is twelfth among all the Under 20 players and in 873rd place in the overall ranking, given that she was the protagonist of the aforementioned Bologna event which culminated with the final victory.
