Italy is daydreaming about the 110 hurdles thanks to Lorenzo Simonelli, who triumphed at the European Championships with the exceptional time of 13.05 and who is launching with great optimism towards the 2024 Paris Olympics, now only a month away. The player from Lazio, already a world champion in the 60 hurdles during the winter, is only 22 years old and seems to have a bright future ahead of him, but Behind him, other very interesting names are already emerging.
One is that of Kyan Escalonawhich in February had signed the Italian under 18 record over 60 hurdles on the occasion of the Italian Indoor Student Championships, staged at the PalaCasali in Ancona. The Kronos Roma standard bearer expressed himself in a remarkable 7.69 in the semi-final and he had so Lorenzo Simonelli’s record was adjusted by a couple of cents held since 2019 (7.71 signed on 27 January 2019 again in the Marche capital).
The class of 2007which will blow out 17 candles only on October 25th, has this the record was taken away from the current absolute national record holder. Born in Senegal and arrived in Italy in 2011 with his parents who moved for work, the young Roman had already stood out in the heat where he scored 7.77, approaching the personal score of 7.75 obtained a month ago. In the final with the 91cm category barriers he then excelled in 7.76, winning the title ahead of Alberico Ghedina (8.04) and Marco Castagna (8.09).
Kyan Escalona boasts in his scoresheet a personal score of 13.98 on the 110 hs (on 17 June 2023 in Rome, again between 91 cm) and a touch of 14.40 among the 106 cm senior hurdles last 11 May in Riti. Some all-round sports enthusiasts will have already heard the name of this promising Italian, but outside the world of athletics. They are not wrong: Kyan Daniel Daffy Escalona had in fact triumphed among the under 12 World Mounted Games Championships in 2019 (let’s talk about equitation).
