Beauden Barrett, 33 years old and with 123 caps for the All Blacks, has returned to play a match for his first club, in the first division of Taranaki, the New Zealand region where he is originally from.

After the Rugby World Cup Barrett left New Zealand and the Blues, his Super Rugby franchise, to play a season in Japan with Toyota Verblitz, a team that finished in mid-table in the Japanese first division.

The Blues tried to get permission to immediately return him to their ranks in time for the Super Rugby playoffs, but received a negative opinion.

And so, while waiting for the All Blacks’ international season to begin, the attacking midfielder put on the green jersey of the Coastal Rugby Club, for which he had played as a boy, for the first time in 14 years.

He came on in the second half and actively participated in his team’s 52-12 victory against Inglewood, which until his arrival on the pitch had held at 5-5 throughout the first half of the game.

“Great to be back here – commented Barrett after the match – I don’t get many opportunities to play for Coastal, but it’s great to see that grassroots rugby is still strong in Taranaki.”
