While, about a month after the release of the film in cinemas, new details on the plot of Deadpool & Wolverine are revealed, the two leading actors and the director Shawn Levy have clarified whether or not Logan will break the fourth wall during the story.
The suspicion arose after a funny promotional spot for Deadpool & Wolverine was shown in US cinemas, in which Logan looked into the car, ordering the audience to turn off their phones. “A lot of actors come into a Deadpool movie and say ‘great, I’ll talk to the camera and break the fourth wall.’ We’re like, ‘No, no, no, there’s an organization here.’ And that’s what makes Deadpool’s tone unique within the movie.“, explained Shawn Levy during an interview with Vanity Fair, thus leaving it to be understood that breaking the fourth wall will remain Deadpool’s prerogative.
“There are rules. Very specific rules“, intervened Reynolds, who continued: “The stakes of the film would be reduced if anyone knew about the fourth wall or any other meta-narrative aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has the ability to do this. If everyone did that, then you wouldn’t invest so much in that figure anymore“, Reynolds then intervened. But Hugh Jackman himself provides the definitive answer to the question: “I made the same mistake on the first day. I made the suggestion and they said yes, right“, and then added: “Ryan wonderfully describes Deadpool’s brain as a half-cooked omelette. And so, whatever he’s doing–talking to a camera, talking to Wolverine…–is just yet another annoying gimmick I have to put up with. Who knows what the hell he’s doing?“.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters on July 24, 2024.
