Michael Berg was only 15 years old when he felt ill on the tram in Neustadt, West Germany in 1958, due to an attack of scarlet fever. He is rescued by Hanna Schmitz, a comely forty-year-old who works on the ticket control line and who helps him get home.

When, days later, the young man goes to the woman’s house to thank her, he discovers that he feels a strong attraction for her and the two begin a clandestine sexual relationship.

But she has a strange request: every time they meet, she wants Michael to read a book aloud to her.

The boy now feels in love but, one bad day, he discovers that Hanna has disappeared without a trace after having refused a promotion in the administrative offices of the transport company.

Years later, Michael is a law student at Heidelberg University. As part of a specialization course, his teacher takes him to witness the trial of six women, all former SS guards in concentration camps. Among them there is also Hanna, who is accused by the others of being the one who decided the fate of the prisoners by drawing up the documents with which to carry out the orders.

Furthermore, during testimony it was discovered that she forced some of the inmates to read aloud to her. Incredulous, Michael wants to get to the bottom of it and discover all Hanna’s secrets…
