Serious damage to agriculture Turin, following the bad weather and the very strong hailstorms that yesterday in the late afternoon affected the piedmont and plain area between the Chiusella valley, the Orco valley, the Lanzo valleys and the lower Canavese: this was reported by Turin’s Coldiretti, highlighting that ice balls weighing more than one and a half hectograms, resulting from the aggregation of the grains, already large in themselves, acted like cannonballs on sheds, agricultural vehicles, greenhouses, sowing tunnels. The force of the waters in the Orco valley and a Chiusella valley has eroded agro-silvo-pastoral roads and interrupted ordinary traffic with branches and foliage crashing onto the asphalt, the agricultural organization continues – and in the lowland areas, especially in the Rivarolo area, the damage can be seen on corn which is already struggling to grow due to the lack of sun and on wheat, now close to ripening. In this case, what is worrying are the lodging of the plants which prelude the rotting of the ears and the loss of grains from the same ears hit by the hail.
“The agricultural year entered the summer harvest season in the worst possible way – comments the president of Coldiretti Turin, Bruno Mecca Cici – we have rotten hay in the meadows, hay that would be increasingly precious due to the widespread shortage of raw food materials for livestock. The same goes for wheat and corn that is entering its most delicate growth phase. We think that the new regional administration will have to implement concrete political actions to address the effects of climate change“.
