The precautionary measure of house arrest has been revoked for Matteo Cozzani, the former head of cabinet of the Liguria Region and right-hand man of President Giovanni Toti who resigned from the role last May 29th. The decision was taken in the last few hours by investigating judge Paola Faggioni as part of the maxi investigation into corruption.

Cozzani, defended by the lawyer Massimo Ceresa Gastaldo, has been under house arrest since May 7 and is accused of vote-swapping and electoral corruption with mafia aggravating circumstances. Precisely the resignation as head of cabinet was considered decisive for the mitigation of the measure because “despite the significant seriousness of the conduct”, writes the magistrate, it is “an element favorable to the suspect which leads reasonably to believe that the precautionary needs, although still present, have been reduced in size”. The investigating judge ordered the obligation to stay in Genoa, with a ban on going out from 7pm to 8am and the obligation to sign three times a week.

The precautionary measure against Italo Maurizio Testa, one of the brothers investigated for exchanging votes with mafia aggravating circumstances, has also been attenuated: no longer required to reside in the municipality of Boltiere; but a ban on residence in Liguria.
