The theft occurred around 8:30 p.m.: at least 10 criminals broke into the Mondialpol vault, on the outskirts of Sassari, using an excavator brought to the site by an articulated lorry, which they used to break down the walls. They then shot in the air to scare the guards and stole some bags of money, the contents of which are yet to be verified. To cover their escape, the bandits covered the surrounding streets with nails and set fire to two cars, before fleeing on a road in the wrong direction. They fired 8 gunshots at the carabinieri car that was coming from the opposite direction and, after setting fire to the third car, they managed to take state road 131 towards Cagliari, disappearing without a trace.
Definitely a premeditated theft that has already had precedents: the vault suffered two robberies in 2018 and 2016, when around 10 million euros were stolen. This is symptomatic of the shortage of Sassari Police personnel.
