For those who pass through Lazio, to transit towards southern Italy or as a destination for their holidays this year, we have a very small but wonderful village to recommend. It’s about the Smallest municipality in Lazio and one of the smallest in Italy, so its visit will not take you too long.

Visit Marcetelli: you’ll fall in love with it right away
The municipality we are talking about today is Marcetelli, which has just under ninety inhabitants and an area of 11 square kilometers. It is located in the province of Rieti and, geographically, is surrounded by the La Cimata, Colle Ciccia, Colle Calente and Pietriboni mountains, in fact it is located at 930 meters above sea level. The first news of this town date back to the second half of the eleventh century and are linked to the events of the family at that time attested in the nearby Salto valley, that of the Maeri. Marcatelli seems to be belonged to the Maeri until 1530, when Charles V entrusted half of the fiefdoms in that area to the Cesarini, that is, to the church. The municipal autonomy of Marcatelli took shape in the period between 1800 and 1861:.
Today, if you go to Marcatelli, you can breathe a timeless air. The central square is Piazza della Porta and here overlooks Palazzo Barberini. Architecturally important is the chapel of San Rocco, probably dating back to the seventeenth century. Also worth an excursion are the woods of the nearby Monte Santo where the church of Santa Maria in Villa is erected.

Recently, the mayor of Mercetelli spoke to Il Messaggero and talked about the fight against depopulation and the affection that the residents feel for that small village.
“We live well here. The air is pure, the nature is uncontaminated and anyone who has been to Marceltelli at least once will certainly return. In the summer we are over two hundred people. The country is alivealthough it is easy to believe the opposite” Daniele Raimondi told Il Messaggero, speaking about the small village he administers.
