Reggio Calabria: illicit waste trafficking, 5 precautionary measures

(LaPresse) The forestry police of Reggio Calabria carried out 5 precautionary measures, including one of house arrest and four of the obligation to report to the judicial police, issued by the investigating judge of the court of Reggio against as many subjects of Italian and Romanian nationality. The investigation, carried out under the direction of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, shed light on a criminal association aimed at the illicit management of waste, its illicit combustion, and the organized illicit trafficking of waste. The vehicles (trucks) used by members of the group for waste handling were also subjected to seizure for the purpose of confiscation. The suspects allegedly illegally disposed of large quantities of waste of various types (wooden, ferrous, construction, plastic, sheathing and, even more seriously, asbestos sheets) on agricultural land on the outskirts of the city, belonging to unaware subjects. The subjects “consigned the waste to the illegally created landfill and then proceeded with its combustion, thus setting up an organized and efficient system, of alarming gravity – the investigators write -, suitable for endangering the health of an indeterminate number of people, as well as creating serious damage and disfigurement to environmental matrices”.
