Abel Ferrara’s film on Padre Pio arrives in theaters

The film “Padre Pio” by Abel Ferrara, who wrote the screenplay together with Maurizio Braucci, will be released in theaters on July 18th. After a long wait and several months of filming, RS Productions has finally announced the release date. Ferrara shot many scenes in various locations in Puglia, particularly in Gargano and Monte Sant’Angelo, in the province of Foggia. The latter city, finalist for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2025 and current capital of Apulian culture, was one of the main locations. Some shots were taken in the streets of Monte Sant’Angelo and in its sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael, which celebrates the thirteenth anniversary of UNESCO recognition.

The protagonist of the film is the international star Shia Labeouf, known for films such as “Pieces of a Woman,” “Blood Must Have Blood,” “Honey Boy,” and “Borg McEnroe.” He stars alongside Italian actors such as Marco Leonardi (“My Place Is Here”), Asia Argento, and Vincenzo Crea (“Gloria!”).

The film offers a free interpretation and a faithful portrait of the early years of Padre Pio’s spiritual journey. The story begins in 1920, immediately after the Great War, and follows the saint from Pietrelcina as he arrives at a remote Capuchin convent in San Giovanni Rotondo. Here, Padre Pio began his ministry and his religious journey, immediately managing to bring the community closer to religion in a place devastated by war.
