Autonomous Vehicle Trials in Lioni (Avellino)

On the Borgo 4.0 track in the municipality of Lioni, in the province of Avellinoit began testing of autonomous and connected vehicles.

In this scenario they will alternate until September i vehicles in the testing phase developed as part of the research projects of the technological platform led by Anfia, with the first tests for Stellantis and Blue Engineering.

These are autonomous, sustainable vehicles connected to new generation infrastructures being tested in the circuit created in Lioni as part of the Borgo 4.0 technological platform, public-private partnership coordinated by the managing entity “Anfia Automotive” with 54 companies in the sector, three public research centers, the five Campania universities, and the CNR.

Fiat E-Ducato

Starting from June and until September, the prototypes developed by the companies will alternate to test what has been designed and developed so far in the laboratory. The first to take to the track was the new Fiat Professional E-Ducato, produced in Italy by Stellantis, for the F-Mobility Project. In the coming weeks, the testing phase will also include a “City Logistic” service which will involve the electric Ducato to optimize courier deliveries, in relation to traffic and the goods to be delivered. The application in a real context will allow the vehicle’s performance to be verified, both on standard routes and on routes with different morphological and geographical conformations. The testing phase will also serve to test the functioning of the battery pack of future commercial vehicles, streamlining energy consumption performance.

Blue Bus Borgo 4.0

The two-wagon electric bus from Blue engineering, based in Turin and Pomigliano d’Arco. The two-wagon bus will turn in area 7 of the Borgo 4.0 track in Lioni to test different methods of using electric traction, wireless charging and batteries. A testing phase will also follow on the city streets where various smart applications have been installed, making Lioni a true smart city.

Giovanni Fabozzi, coordinator of the Borgo 4.0 project on behalf of Anfia, explains that, at the end of the testing operations, there will be a public demonstration of the technologies developed in the projects in recent years.

All testing activities are supervised by the Control Room of the Municipal Police, led by Commander Giuseppe Aiello, to verify the technological interconnectivity of the electronic devices installed on the streets of Lioni and the transmission of data in real time.

Promoted by ANFIA, National Association of the Automotive Industrythe platform is created with the involvement of a public-private partnership involving 54 companies in the sector, 3 public research centres, 5 Campania universities, the CNR for a total of 200 researchers involved.

Through research, development and technological transfer actions, the project is giving life to the first example in Italy, in the Borgo di Lioni in the province of Avellino, of a smart city with intelligent and connected urban and extra-urban roads intended to test the most advanced solutions linked to the development of new technological trends and autonomous mobility and connected.

New traffic and infrastructure monitoring systems, innovative materials for safer and lighter cars, technologies for the electrification and ecological transition of the sector, solutions for the provision of infomobility services and intelligent maintenance, in 16 research projects developed by Borgo 4.0 involve all the main trajectories of the future of Automotive.

Infrastructure services

In particular, the infrastructure will support study, research and experimentation activities in the streets of the Borgo di Lioni which can now be used as a laboratory and real scenario for the construction of solutions for communication and data exchange between intelligent vehicles – V2V Vehicle-Vehicle model – and between vehicles and infrastructure – V2I Vehicle-Infrastructure model. Borgo 4.0 represents the first integrated platform in Europe created in a real environment in which to develop and test the plurality of innovative solutions for the mobility of the future driven by digitalisation and environmental sustainability.
