TOyet another episode of gratuitous violence against public transport in Foggia. Yesterday evening, at around 8pm, a bus on ATAF line 16, heading towards the terminus, was targeted by a stone thrower at the intersection between Viale Europa and Via Alfieri. Fortunately, the cowardly gesture did not cause any injuries among the passengers on board, but caused damage to the vehicle.
This is yet another act of vandalism affecting ATAF buses in recent months, creating a climate of strong concern among operating staff and users. In fact, similar episodes had already occurred in other areas of the city in the past, fueling a sense of insecurity and unease.
The undersigned trade union organizations, signatories of the statement, firmly express their condemnation of these unacceptable acts and ask the competent authorities for immediate intervention to guarantee the safety of those traveling and working on public transport.
“We believe it is essential that the seriousness of the situation is not underestimated and that immediate measures are taken to protect the safety of drivers and passengers,” declare the union representatives. “For this reason, we urgently ask for the establishment of fixed police forces in the most critical areas of the city, in order to prevent further acts of vandalism and guarantee the smooth running of the public transport service”.
The trade union organizations conclude the statement by hoping for a rapid and positive response to their requests, reiterating their willingness to collaborate with the institutions to find concrete solutions to the problem of safety on public transport.
Citizens’ safety and the right to an efficient and safe public transport service cannot be questioned. A concrete commitment is necessary on the part of all the competent institutions to stamp out gratuitous violence and guarantee the peaceful conduct of daily life in Foggia.
