The Saxophone Museum in Fiumicino is preparing to welcome an unmissable musical event: the Michael Supnick Dixieland concert. On Saturday 29 June at 9.30pm, the famous American trumpeter Michael Supnick, together with a quintet of expert jazz musicians, will offer an evening dedicated to Dixieland, a musical genre known for its ability to entertain and involve the public. This event is part of the “Make beautiful sounds 2024” series and promises to transport spectators into the festive and lively atmosphere of the streets of New Orleans.

A musical journey through the streets of New Orleans

Michael Supnick’s Dixieland concert at the Saxophone Museum is inspired by the “street parades” of New Orleans, the musical parades that animated the streets of the city during public holidays, weddings and events. These parades were a staple of New Orleans’ musical culture, used to celebrate events such as Mardi Gras, election campaigns, or the opening of new venues. The repertoire proposed by Supnick’s quintet will be mainly based on the music of Louis Armstrong, one of the most representative figures of Dixieland.

The quintet, in addition to Michael Supnick on trumpet and vocals, is made up of Augusto Travagliati on clarinet, Nicola Fumarola on trombone, Gino Cardamone on banjo and Alessandro Cicchirillo on tuba bass. These musicians, with their experience and passion for the genre, will be able to recreate the energy and vitality of the small orchestras of New Orleans, offering the public an authentic and engaging musical experience.

Michael Supnick’s career: from Worcester to Fiumicino

Michael Supnick, born in Worcester (USA) in 1962, has a family history rich in artistic influences. His mother, Judith Ephron, gave him a passion for music, being herself a folk musician active in the 1960s. The Ephron family is well-known in the world of entertainment, with members such as Nora Ephron, screenwriter and producer of the famous film “When Harry Met Sally”. Michael began studying the trombone at age ten and continued his musical education at Berklee College of Music, where he graduated in 1984.

Since 1985, Supnick has been a constant presence in the Italian and international jazz scene, participating in festivals, television programs and numerous recordings. He has collaborated with prominent artists such as Marcello Rosa, Renzo Arbore and Lino Patruno, and has taken part in important events such as Umbria Jazz. Furthermore, he is the artistic director of the “Swing Marathon” festival in Albania for the International Jazz Day (UNESCO). In addition to music, Michael has also acted in theater and films, including Giuseppe Tornatore’s “The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean”.
